Director\'s Insight
At A Glance
The school day begins at 8:00 AM with students in classrooms by 8:15 AM. Daily core classes with homeroom teacher: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science/Cultural Studies. Students attend Art, Music, PE, Technology, and Library weekly. Foreign language classes (Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, German, Korean) or Intensive English extension meet three times a week. School day ends at 3:50 PM.
Main Campus is located in the heart of Seaworld in Shekou. The spacious campus includes an indoor gym, rooftop playground, three multipurpose rooms, an extensive library, three computer labs, two makerspaces, an indoor atrium spanning four floors, cafeteria, and rock climbing wall. An outdoor playground and field across the street are used during recess and PE. The library features six iPad stations and a large LCD video wall for sharing online reading resources and presentations.
Students ages 11-13 participate in after-school athletics competing through ACSI, SDRC, PRC, and SISAC conferences. QSI students regularly win Sportsmanship Awards for teamwork, positive attitudes, and politeness. Clubs include drama, Model United Nations (MUN), debate, DragonTV (daily student broadcast), National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Math Olympiads, and more.
Class sizes are limited to 20 students with one homeroom teacher. 8-year-old classes include a homeroom teacher and one paraprofessional, ensuring one-on-one attention and support.
Main Campus staff includes 60 full-time, certified, experienced teachers mostly from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Support staff includes a Director of Instruction, Academic Coordinator, Counselor, Nurse, and office staff.
8 – 13 Year Old Subjects
Mathematics and science courses use US-published textbooks aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The hands-on approach combines experiments with reflective discussions, reading, writing, and drawing. Students observe, measure, collect, categorize, predict, record, and interpret scientific concepts. Secondary mathematics courses are offered for advanced students placed according to their abilities.
The IE program serves 8-13 year old students needing focused English support. Students attend specialized English classes during daily reading and writing periods with the goal of transitioning to regular classes as quickly as possible.
The Reading Curriculum focuses on cognitive reading strategies: making connections, predicting, determining importance, and synthesizing. Students explore fiction, nonfiction, short story, poetry, and drama. The Writing Curriculum evaluates students on ideas, organization, word choice, voice, conventions, sentence fluency, and presentation. Student progress is measured bi-annually through school-wide writing assessments.
Main Campus offers Chinese at all levels (beginner to native speaker) and Introductory Spanish. Foreign language classes meet five days a week and introduce students to the culture, history, and customs of countries where the language is spoken.
Students take weekly Art, Music, and PE classes with specialized teachers. Instrumental Music is also available as an option.
